About Chilean Wines

Chilean Wine Regions(Click on the map to the right to download) West of the Andes, Chile's climate varies from the heat of the arid, rocky, mountainous desert to the north and the icy, Antarctic expanse in the south. Midway between the two are the warm, fertile valleys that are home to this nation's vineyards. While viticulture has been practiced in Chile for centuries, it is only in the past decade that world class wines have been the focus of Chilean winemakers. Previously most of the red wines from Chile had an unappealing, green, herbaceous character to them as a result of overcropping (high yields). Now there are lots of tasty, excellent value wines to be found.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chile’s signature red grape, Carmenère make up the bulk of the red wines. Carmenère was previously planted in Bordeaux but was never replanted after phylloxera wiped out the vineyards there, and is often found blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot as it was in Bordeaux.
