(Click
on the map to the right to download) Argentina is
currently the world's fifth largest wine producer by volume – after
France, Italy, Spain and the USA in that order – a
position it has held for many years. Recent investments
in vineyards and wineries are really paying dividends and
there are now more high quality wines from Argentina in
the marketplace than ever before. But you do need to be
selective because there are a lot of high volume labels
that are not worth your time.
The Mendoza region is most likely the name you will see on a bottle of Argentine wine. This area is a high desert in the rain shadow of the Andes Mountains that gets almost no rainfall during the growing season and must rely on ancient irrigation systems put in place some 400 years ago by the native Hurapes. Malbec is the grape that people think of first when you say Argentina, but an increasing number of good wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Bonarda and Merlot are finding their way to the export market. The highly aromatic white grape Torrontes has great appeal as a break from the usual glass of Chardonnay. Almost 90% of all Argentine wine is consumed domestically.
