About South African Wines

(Click on the map to the right to download - map courtesy of wikipedia) Winemaking has been practiced on the Cape for over 300 years. The Dutch East India Company initially established a refreshment station there to provide fresh food to the company’s merchant fleet headed to India and the surrounding areas. A thriving wine industry developed from there and for much of the 20th century was controlled by the KWV or the Kooperatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereeninging Beperkt van Zuid-Afrika (Co-operative Wine Growers Association Limited of South Africa). This was good for many grape farmers but was not good overall for the wine industry as the focus was not on quality. However, since the abolishment of Apartheid in the late 1990’s there has been a keen motivation to improve the quality of South African wines.
