About Spanish Wines

Spanish Wine Regions(Click on the map to the right to download) Spain has more vineyard area than any other country in the world – about 3.5 million acres. But Spain ranks third in total wine production. Because of the extremely dry climate, yields are very low. Even so, Spain produces about 950 million gallons of wine a year – about 2/3 as much wine as Italy or France. Until recently, Spain was known mostly for bargain wines. But during the last few years the Spanish wine industry has changed rapidly and dramatically. Wine makers have made significant investments in improved vineyard practices, new winemaking technology, and modern bodegas.

In the 1860s, powdery mildew and phylloxera devastated the French wine industry and French wine merchants were not able to purchase enough wine in France. Many of them fled from Bordeaux to Spain and they brought French winemaking practices with them. For centuries, France and Spain shared both a border and a common winemaking heritage. Winemakers often crossed the border, exchanging grapes and winemaking practices. Then, in the middle of the 19th century, the phylloxera epidemic hit Europe. Although the epidemic eventually reached Spain, it devastated the French winemaking industry first. Searching for new sources of wine, French wine merchants from Bordeaux fled to Spain, especially to the regions of Rioja and Penedes. These merchants brought French winemaking methods to Spain. And they introduced the 225 liter (60 gallon) oak barrels that became known as barricas. These small oak barrels became a major part of the winemaking practices of the Rioja region. In 1926, the Denominación de Origen or DO system of controlled appellations was first established based upon the French AOC system.

For several hundred years the southern region of Jerez was the most important wine region, known for its Sherry production. Now high quality wines are available from all corners of Spain. From Rias Baixas on the west coast to Priorat near Barcellona on the east coast, with Rioja and Ribera del Duero in between, modern wines of distinction are garnering high praise from critics around the world. We have a large selection of wines from the major growing regions of Spain: Rioja, Penedes, Rias Baixas, Priorat, Ribera del Duero, Toro, La Mancha, Aragon, Bierzo, Jumilla, Montsant and Valencia. If you don’t find what you are looking for below please call us and we will make every effort to locate the wine you desire.
