About German Wines

German Wine Regions(Click on the map to the right to download) The Romans brought viticulture to the banks of the Rhine in about the first century and vines had spread to the Mosel by the third century. By the middle of the 1400’s Germany had more than four times as much land under vine as today but this included Alsace which was ceded to France following the end of the 30 Years War in 1648. Riesling is probably the most well known German grape but its arrival in the Rheingau in 1435 was relatively late. Other varietals including Silvaner, Muskat, Traminer, Spätburgunder, and Trollinger were commonly planted as mixed field blends rather than defined mono-varietal blocks.

In the 19th century German wine saw its golden age with the finest wines from the Rhine and neighboring zones fetching prices higher than first growth Bordeaux. Following WWII German winemakers focused on quantity rather than quality and massive amounts of undistinguished sweet wine came flowing from the vineyards resulting in the degradation of esteem for German wine. In recent years many small producers have made great strides in bringing quality to the forefront and more people are discovering just how delicious and ageable fine Riesling can be. We have a large selection of German Rieslings from some of the best producers along the Mosel and Rhine rivers along with a few exceptional wines from the Pfalz region.
