About Austrian Wines

Austrian Wine Regions(Click on the map to the right to download) Austria is probably best known for its Grüner Veltliner which accounts for about a third of all vineyard plantings and is produced in a range of styles from light, peppery and dry to Spätlese wines that are rich in extracts and alcohol and thus age particularly well. The areas where Veltliner is most widely-planted are located in the state of Niederösterreich, or Lower Austria. Grüner Veltliner, like Riesling expresses the soil that it grows in very well: racy and powerful from loess; delicately spicy and mineral-toned from primary rock. And from loamy clay soils, it demonstrates a robust character.

Let’s not forget that Austria makes some really unique red wines too. From Zweigelt to Blaufränkisch to Pinot Noir. These wines aren’t the muscular style of reds that come from Napa Valley or Barossa Valley, rather they are more elegant and refined and make excellent wines to have with a meal.
