About Australian Wines

Australian Wine Regions(Click on the map to the right to download) Australia has been making wine since the early 1800’s but until the late 1970’the bulk of it was sweet or fortified. Since then major advances have been made and world-class wines made from a number of different grape varieties come from many regions of Australia. Government subsidies and a lack of ‘traditional’ winemaking have led to many new techniques being developed in Australia both in the vineyard and the winery with subsequent export to other wine regions of the world resulting in a global increase in wine quality.

Australia is a land mass approximately the same size as the Unites States but has only 22 million inhabitants. The major regions in Australia are Western Australia (Margaret River, Pemberton), New South Wales (Hunter Valley, Mudgee), South Australia (Coonawarra, Clare Valley, Padthaway, Adelaide Hills, Barossa), Tasmania, and Victoria (Yarra Valley, Geelong, Mornington Peninsula, Goulburn Valley). Probably most well known for its affordable, fruit-forward style of Syrah (down under it’s known as Shiraz), Australia also makes world-class Riesling, Chardonnay, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Historically Australian winemakers tended to blend wines from rather large geographic regions in an attempt to have a consistent style. Now there is a trend for more closely defined wines that speak to the terroir of their origin. Much of the mass produced wine from down under is plonk and not worth the bottle it comes in, but if you look beyond the big labels there are some fantastic wines that represent good value. There are also several iconic wines that fetch hundreds of dollars and are coveted by collectors the world over (Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace, Torbreck Run Rig and D’Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz to name a few).
