About Oregon Wines

(Click on the map to the right to download) Even though wine has been made in Oregon since the mid-1800’s, real commercial production didn’t begin until the 1960’s when David Lett, Charles Coury and Dick Erath moved from California to the Willamette Valley and began planting Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling believing that cool-climate varieties would thrive there. Much like the story in California it took a French tasting competition to put Oregon on the world wine map and David Lett’s 1975 Oregon Pinot Noir took top honors at the 1979 Gault-Millau French Wine Olympiades against some of France’s best Burgundy producers. There are now some 16 different American Viticultural Areas in Oregon that accommodate over 300 wineries.

The picture in southern Oregon is a bit different. Warmer temperatures allow for the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, & Viognier. There is significantly less rainfall than in the Willamette Valley and most of the vineyards are situated in high mountain valleys between 1000 and 2000 feet above sea level.
