About California Wines

(Click on the maps to the right to download) Winemaking in California dates back to the 1700’s when Spanish missionaries established vineyards in California and Mexico to produce wine for Mass from the Mission grape. Fine wine didn’t come to the Golden State until the mid-19th century and by the early 1900’s there were hundreds of grape varieties being grown for more than 750 wineries. When Prohibition struck in 1919 the California wine industry was nearly destroyed and by the time of its repeal in 1933 there were only 140 wineries still in operation. Over the next 40 years many new wineries opened and total vineyard plantings increased dramatically but it wasn’t until the Paris Tasting of 1976 that California wine was really put on the map so to speak. At a blind tasting held in Paris top French wines were pitted against some of Napa Valley’s best producers and the upstart California wines took top honors for both red and white wines. Now California is the fourth largest wine producing region in the world behind Italy, France and Spain and accounts for more than 90% of all wine produced in America.
